Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned about prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion and other abnormalities of the dentofacial region.
Most malocclusions are inherited. These include crowding, generalized spacing, supernumerary or missing teeth, cleft palate, and a variety of irregularities of the jaws and face. Some malocclusions are acquired. This subject is taught in final year BDS. Different types of malocclusion are treated by fixed, removable and myofunctional orthodontic treatment. Orthognathic surgical cases are also performed in the department. Beautiful smile is just one of the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Straight teeth simply function better and are easier to clean. The increased confidence and self-esteem is due to healthy smile.
