Awareness to Action: Empowering Women against Breast Cancer

The Department of Community Medicine at the University Medical and Dental College organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar aimed at enhancing public understanding and promoting awareness of this significant health concern.

Dr Rafshan Sadiq, a distinguished and experienced oncologist from PINUM Cancer Hospital, Faisalabad, presented compelling statistics indicating that approximately 90,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually in Pakistan, accounting for nearly 40% of all cancers among women. She emphasized that around half of these patients succumb to the disease without receiving appropriate treatment, underscoring the urgent need for early detection, timely intervention, and heightened public awareness. Dr Rafshan also demonstrated the correct technique for breast self-examination, highlighting its vital role in the early identification and prevention of breast cancer.

Prof Dr Saira Saleem, Head of the Breast Surgery Department at Madinah Teaching Hospital, delivered an insightful and impactful presentation during the Seminar. Through a series of clinical images, she highlighted the alarming issue of late presentation of breast cancer among women in our community. Dr Saira emphasized that the underlying causes of this delay are deeply rooted in illiteracy, ignorance, fear, and cultural taboos that prevent women from seeking timely medical attention. She stressed that breast cancer is completely curable when detected and treated in its early stages, underscoring the importance of awareness, education, and regular screening. She also shared that the Department of Breast Surgery at Madinah Teaching Hospital offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to breast cancer patients.

The event was honored by the presence of members Board of Governors, TUF, Mrs Haider Amin, as the Chief Guest, and Ms Fizza Amin as Guest of Honour. The occasion was also graced by Principal UMDC Prof Dr Akram Malik and Vice Principal Prof Dr Shirza Nadeem. They presented awards to the winners of the poster, painting, quiz, and video competitions held in connection with the seminar. Prof Dr Akram Malik commended the dedication and collaborative efforts of the MBBS students and faculty members in organizing such a meaningful and impactful awareness event.

This seminar was a critical step in raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting early detection efforts within the community.
