The Department of Community Dentistry, University Medical & Dental College (UMDC), organized a Community Dental Health activity at Madina Teaching Hospital (MTH), providing 2nd Year BDS students with valuable practical exposure to patient history taking and dental caries assessment using the DMFT (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth) Index. The activity aimed to strengthen students' clinical competence while promoting preventive oral healthcare within the community.
During the activity, students interacted with patients attending the dental outpatient department, recording comprehensive medical and dental histories before conducting intraoral examinations. They assessed each patient's oral health using the DMFT Index, enabling them to identify decayed, missing, and filled teeth while applying epidemiological concepts in real clinical settings. Patients also received individualized oral health education on proper brushing techniques, fluoride use, healthy dietary habits, regular dental check-ups, and preventive dental care.
This community-based learning experience successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with clinical practice, enabling students to enhance their diagnostic, communication, record-keeping, and patient management skills. The initiative reinforced the importance of comprehensive history taking and DMFT assessment in identifying oral health needs, planning preventive strategies, and fostering greater oral health awareness among the community, reflecting UMDC's commitment to academic excellence and community service.
