On 14 June, World Blood Donor Day is celebrated globally as a tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors who give others a second chance at life. Their generosity saves lives, strengthens communities, and embodies the spirit of solidarity.
Department of Pathology University Medical and Dental College (UMDC) has been celebrating this day in form of awareness lectures, seminars, blood donation activities and quiz competitions to encourage both new and existing donors, to highlight the positive impact of blood donation on health and well-being of others and to raise public awareness about the critical need for blood and plasma donations and the impact they have on patients' lives.
This year Pathology Department celebrated World Blood Donor Day with a seminar aimed at raising awareness about the critical need for safe blood donations and proper transfusions under the slogan of the year “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives”.
The Event was enlightened by the presence of guest speaker Dr Usman Ansari, Professor of Hematology at Aziz Fatima Medical College & consultant hematologist at Agha Khan Regional Center, Faisalabad. The event was graced by the presence of Prof Dr Shirza Nadeem, Vice Principal UMDC.
Of special mention, Arooj Fatima, a student of the final year MBBS & President of the Blood Donation Society UMDC, provided a comprehensive overview of the society’s mission and recent activities. Following her presentation, Sidra Aslam, Final Year MBBS student, shared digital posters created by students from all years as part of a competition. These posters emphasized the importance of blood donation.
This was followed by an enlightening talk by Dr Usman Ansari on “Massive Blood Transfusion Protocols,” which became the main core of the seminar. He explained how to manage large-scale transfusions during emergencies, helping both students and faculty to gain a clearer understanding of basic rules of blood donation.
Following this, Dr Sadia Ijaz, Associate Professor Hematology UMDC, acknowledged the significant role played by the MTH Blood Bank in collaboration with the UMDC Blood Donation Society and Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority. The blood bank’s timely support during the Bunyan ul Marsoos mission was vital to the success of the operation. A moment of silence was observed, and the audience, faculty, and guests paid tribute to the Pakistan Army for their successful completion of the mission, which was a critical part of national security efforts.
Dr Usman Ansari was presented a shield of acknowledgment by Prof Dr Shirza Nadeem. The winning digital posters were announced and honored with the presentation of awards. Dr Usman, Dr Shirza Nadeem, Dr Shazia Aslam, Head of Pathology Department, and Dr Komal Atta, Director of Medical Education, honored the winners of the Digital Poster Competition by presenting medals and certificates. In her closing remarks, Dr Shirza Nadeem thanked the guest speakers, participants, and faculty members for their invaluable contributions.
