World Thalassemia Day Video Competition 2026

World Thalassemia Day, observed every year on 8th May to spread knowledge about thalassemia; a hereditary blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Thalassemia reduces the body’s ability to produce healthy hemoglobin, leading to severe anemia, fatigue, delayed growth, and the need for repeated blood transfusions. Early diagnosis, carrier screening, and public awareness can help prevent and manage this disease effectively. This year’s theme emphasizes education, prevention, and support for patients and families living with thalassemia.

To mark this important occasion the Department of Pathology, UMDC organized a Video Competition on World Thalassemia Day. 3rd year, 4th year MBBS students and 1st year BDS participated in the event. Prof Dr Shirza Nadeem, Vice Principal, UMDC graced the event as the chief guest.

Dr Umber Salman, Associate Professor, Anatomy, Prof Dr Shazia Aslam, HOD Pathology and Dr Sarosh Iqbal, Assistant Professor, Oral Biology spared their precious time for being judges of this competition.

Participants were encouraged to create informative and creative videos highlighting:

• Causes and inheritance of thalassemia
• Importance of premarital screening
• Blood donation awareness
• Challenges faced by thalassemia patients
• Prevention and community education

Certificates were awarded to the position holders by respected Vice Principal and faculty members. The event was concluded by remarks of Prof Dr Shazia Aslam. Let us join hands to support thalassemia patients and promote awareness for a healthier future.
