World Malaria Day 2022

Malaria is a disease of poverty and results in poverty. In an effort to control and prevent malaria in the community, The Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with the District Health Authority Faisalabad organized the “World Malaria Day” seminar on 20th April 2022. World Malaria Day 2022 is marked under the theme “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.This objective of reducing the malaria burden and eliminating malaria is intrinsically linked to most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and is central to SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and its Target 3.3: “By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, “malaria” and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.””

Dr Mohammed Zulqurnain, currently serving as District Health Program Coordinator for Epidemics Control (Faisalabad District), gave a brief overview of Pakistan’s malaria control program. He shared his field experience with the audience and highlighted data & protocols regarding house surveys in the Faisalabad district which serve as part of the larvae control measures being applied among the high-risk populations. He educated the audience about the measures necessary to prevent mosquito bites. On this occasion, Prof Dr Mirza Akaml Sharif, Head of Medicine Department at Madinah Teaching Hospital (MTH) Faisalabad, shared the disease burden of malaria in the community. He enlightened the audience about the new treatment modalities used for the treatment of this debilitating disease. He further shared his international experience with innovative strategies used in the developed world to control the Anopheles mosquito (malaria spreading mosquito). Miss Rashida Nasreen serving as District Entomologist for control of malaria program in District Health Authority gave a comprehensive presentation to the audience on vector control measures for larvae detection in stagnant water. She highlighted the utilization of rapid malaria kits for early detection of malaria. She reinforced the measures necessary to prevent the mosquito bite.
