Introduction
The Department of Community Medicine at UMDC is dedicated to promoting public health, disease prevention, and community wellbeing. Its mission is to educate future doctors while fostering a sense of social responsibility and public‑health awareness among students.
During the fourth year of MBBS, students study core subjects like epidemiology, biostatistics, health care systems, health education, maternal and child health, family planning, and prevention of communicable and non‑communicable diseases. Through these courses, students gain insight into population health, disease patterns, and strategies to protect communities.
A key feature of the department is its emphasis on hands-on learning. Students take part in field visits to health centers, engage with community health issues, and learn public‑health survey design, data collection, and analysis. They also participate in activities such as awareness campaigns, poster and model competitions, and health-education projects.
The department aims to develop healthcare professionals who are not only skilled clinicians but also community leaders, health educators, effective communicators, caregivers, lifelong learners, and researchers. By combining academic learning with community engagement, students develop social accountability, empathy, and a public-service mindset.
Graduates are equipped to address public health challenges such as disease prevention, health promotion, maternal and child care, and community awareness. Their training enables them to improve population health outcomes and contribute to preventive care and public health initiatives. Read More
