Preventive and Community Dentistry constitutes the aspects of preventing and controlling oral dental diseases, promoting oral health, and improving the quality of life through organized community efforts.
In addition to disease prevention, oral health promotion and dental health education, the activities being undertaken in the field of community dentistry include administration of dental care programs, planning and evaluation of dental care services and basic/applied dental research.
Students are given the concept of the various sub-disciplines involved in this specialty which are oral epidemiology and biostatistics; political, social, and behavioral sciences; biological and physical sciences; health economics, health education, socio-anthropology and determinants of oral health and disease. All lectures delivered are evidence based and advanced. This subject is taught to the students of second professional year.
Every year on Oral Health Day, a free dental camp is organized in which patients are educated and are given free advice and required atraumatic restorative treatment to improve their oral health. The department also arrange free dental checkups and treatments for different primary schools and villages on yearly basis and are pursued for follow-up treatments.
