Introduction

The Department of Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology focuses on the structure, development, and function of the oral cavity and its related tissues. It integrates knowledge from anatomy, histology, physiology, microbiology, and biochemistry to explain how the mouth functions in health and disease. The oral cavity plays a vital role in essential activities such as mastication (chewing), speech, swallowing, and facial expression, as well as serving as the first line of defense in the digestive and immune systems.

Objectives

After studying this subject, the student will be able to:

Understand the basic biological principles related to the development, structure, and function of the oral cavity and teeth.
Describe the anatomy and histology of teeth and their supporting structures.
Identify and differentiate between primary and permanent teeth based on morphological features.
Explain the form and function of various types of teeth and their role in mastication.
Recognize normal oral tissues and distinguish them from pathological conditions.
Apply knowledge of tooth morphology in clinical procedures such as restoration, extraction, and prosthetic planning.
Understand occlusion and the relationship between maxillary and mandibular teeth.
Develop skills in tooth identification and charting.
Correlate oral biological concepts with preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic dental practices.
Foster scientific reasoning and appreciation for evidence-based dental care.

Facilities

The department offers modern labs equipped with microscopes, models and charts for practical learning. Students can observe tooth histology slides, dental tissues and oral structures in detail.The laboratory also facilitates students for tooth carving on wax or soap blocks.

Audio-visual aids, interactive sessions and demonstrations help make complex topics easier to understand. The Department of Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology also provides a supportive environment where teachers guide students in every step of their learning journey.

The Department of Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology forms the foundation of dental education for Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students.
