Introduction
The Department of Biochemistry at University Medical and Dental College (UMDC) was established in 2003. The department is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. As a foundational basic science discipline, Biochemistry bridges the gap between basic scientific principles and their clinical applications. The department is involved in undergraduate coaching three teaching classes on Modular Integrated Curriculum2K23 by University of Health Sciences (UHS) for First year MBBS, Second year MBBS and First year BDS.
Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to study of biological processes at cellular and molecular level. The student who has a sound knowledge of biochemistry will therefore be in a better position to understand and take advantage of the advances in medicine & dentistry, which will take place during professional life.
The department is blessed with highly competent, experienced and committed faculty members who focus on teaching and grooming the students and bringing out the best from them.
Vision & Mission
Our vision is to
- Provide students with high-quality learning in biochemistry that builds their future in medicine, dentistry and research.
- To be a center of excellence in biochemical education and research, nurturing future healthcare professionals who are scientifically competent, ethically responsible, and dedicated to improving patient care.
The mission of the department is to:
- Offer strong academic support for MBBS and BDS students.
- Deliver human biochemistry knowledge in a simple and practical way.
- Connect classroom learning with real medical and dental practice.
- Encourage curiosity, critical thinking and research among students.
- Inculcate all the qualities of a seven star doctor in the learners
Objectives
The main objectives of the department are:
- Complete understanding, at the molecular level, of all of the chemical processes associated with living cells.
- Provide comprehensive, student-centered biochemistry training aligned with integrated medical and dental curricula.
- Develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills through integrated teaching and clinical correlations.
- Promote research, innovation, and critical inquiry among learners and facilitators
- Uphold professional ethics, academic integrity, and collaborative learning
- Build a strong foundation of biochemistry for all medical and dental students.
Facilities
The Department of Biochemistry is equipped with modern lecture halls having audio-visual tools .The department has a state of the art, well equipped, biochemistry laboratory containing all necessary apparatus to perform practicals. Practical learning is an essential part of the teaching process helping students’ link theory with practice. These facilities allow students to understand clinical biochemistry and gain diagnostic skills for their future careers.
